The stampede took place after a match between two Indonesian football teams: "Arema" and "Persebaya Surabaya".

The team "Arema" lost with the score 3:2, its fans threw bottles at the players and ran out onto the field.

Police fired tear gas, causing panic and a stampede as hundreds of people ran for the exits.

In the chaos, 34 people died in the stadium, authorities said, and others died later when they were taken to nearby hospitals.

As of midday on October 2 local time, the number of dead was 174, the deputy governor of East Java, Emil Dardak, told local media.

East Java police chief Niko Afinta said the death toll could rise as many of the injured were in critical condition.

The incident is one of the world's worst stadium disasters, including the 1996 World Cup qualifier between Guatemala and Costa Rica, where more than 80 people died and more than 100 were injured.
