On Sunday, October 2, the president of the Arctic Academy of the Russian Federation, a former officer of the Navy, professor Valery Mitko, died in St. Petersburg.

He was under house arrest for more than two years in the case of treason. 

This is reported by the Russian mass media with reference to his lawyers.

Recently, an ambulance has been called more and more frequently to a scientist suspected of treason and taken to the hospital.

A few days ago, he returned from the hospital on a stretcher.

His wife was waiting for him at home, she was ill.

According to the version of the investigation, the scientist handed over secret materials to the special services of China during a trip to this country.

His defense assured that all the data was taken from the Internet.

Valery Mitka was detained in February 2020, and in July was charged with treason.

According to the information of the Association of Public Organizations of Navy Veterans, Mitko is a reserve captain of the first rank, the head of the hydroacoustics department of the Naval Academy since 1990.

He served in the Pacific Fleet as the head of the radio technical service — the commander of the communications combat unit of a surface ship and a nuclear submarine. 

The scientist was a corresponding member of the St. Petersburg Engineering Academy, an academician of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences, a member of the editorial board of the "Technical Acoustics" magazine, a member of the editorial board of the "Shipbuilding" publishing house. 

Valery Mitko also held the position of president of the regional public organization Arctic Public Academy of Sciences of St. Petersburg, which since 2008 has been part of the International Association of Public Organizations of Navy Veterans and Submarines.

It will be recalled that Dmytro Kolker, a physicist from Novosibirsk, who was also suspected of treason and espionage for China, died in Moscow, where he was taken by Russian special services after his arrest.
