Prime Minister Narendra Modi will launch 5G services in select cities of India today.

The service is expected to expand across the country in the next few years.

  • The Prime Minister will launch the much-awaited service at the sixth edition of India Mobile Congress 2022 to be held at Pragati Maidan in New Delhi from October 1 to 4.

  • The India Mobile Congress (IMC), which claims to be the largest telecom, media and technology forum in Asia, is jointly organized by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI).

  • In addition to powering the ultra-low latency connection, which allows full-length high-quality video or movie downloads to mobile devices in a matter of seconds (even in congested areas).

    5G can enable solutions like e-health, connected vehicles, etc.

    Immersive Augmented Reality and Metaverse experiences, life-saving use cases and advanced mobile cloud gaming, among others.

  • “5G can unleash new economic opportunities and social benefits, giving it the potential to become a transformative force for Indian society. It will help the country remove traditional barriers to growth, posed by startups and business enterprises. Along with spurring innovations, will take forward the 'digital' vision of India," said an official release.

  • Union Minister of Communications, Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnav had earlier said that the government has given a target of 80 percent coverage of 5G telecom services in the country in a short time frame.

  • Recently, while addressing an industry event in the national capital, Vaishnav had said, "The 5G journey is going to be very exciting. The point to be noted is that many countries take many to reach 40 per cent to 50 per cent coverage. It took years, but we are hitting a target. Very aggressive timeline and the government has given a target of 80 per cent coverage in a short time frame, and we should definitely cover at least 80 per cent in a very short time frame."

  • Experts said that India will benefit greatly from 5G technology.

    The Indian economy is likely to benefit ₹36.4 trillion ($455 billion) between 2023 and 2040.

    Such is the estimate of a recent report by a global industry body representing mobile network operators.

  • The GSMA (Global System for Mobile Communications) report states that by 2030, 5G will account for more than a third of the total connections in India, with 2G and 3G slashing to less than 10 per cent. 

  • It has also been estimated in the report that which areas will get the benefit of 5G technology.

    The manufacturing sector (representing 20 percent of total profits), retail (12 percent), and agriculture (11 percent).
