The transit of natural gas along the new "Baltic Pipe" gas pipeline from Norway to Poland began today, the operator of the pipeline "Gaz Sistem" announced, quoted by BTA.

"This historic day is today," announced the operator.

"The transit of gas through the Baltic Pipe has started," the company added.

"The gas is already flowing through the Baltic Pipe to Poland," the company said.

Poland has contracted 800 million cubic meters of natural gas for the new Baltic Pipe gas pipeline

"Baltic Pipe" is a multi-billion dollar joint venture of the Polish and Danish gas operators Gas System and Energinet, which connects the Norwegian gas fields with Poland and Denmark.

It was officially opened on Tuesday in a symbolic ceremony.

In 2023, the Polish state natural gas company PGNiG will be able to import at least 6.5 billion cubic meters of natural gas through the pipeline.

That means the company will fill at least 80 percent of the pipeline's capacity.

"In 2024, gas supplies will grow by over 1 billion m3," PGNiG wrote in a statement on Tuesday.
