The Russian monopoly Gazprom reduced the supply of natural

gas

to Moldova on Saturday, October 1, by approximately 30%.

This was reported by Vadym Cheban, director of the gas company "Moldovagaz", writes Reuters.

A day earlier, Deputy Prime Minister Andriy Spinu said that Gazprom had warned Moldova about reducing supplies.

Spinu said on Saturday that technical problems are behind the reduction and the country will ask Gazprom to increase supplies.

"The reason for the reduction in gas supply... was explained by Gazprom too late," Spinu said at a press conference.

Spinu said that Moldova has about 53.5 million cubic meters of gas in underground storages in Ukraine and Romania that can be used.

The country also plans to save gas by using fuel oil in its power units.

Ceban previously said that Moldovagaz paid Gazprom $23.9 million on Friday to cover the balance of an overdue advance payment for September natural gas deliveries and to settle a $35.9 million debt.
