What

nuclear bombs

are like, what exactly they are capable of, how to survive such an attack - the

associate professor of the Department of General and Applied Physics of the National Pedagogical University named after M.P. told

TSN.ua about all this.

Drahomanov Serhii Vasylenko.

"At nuclear power plants, on submarines, where the atom is used, there is a controlled nuclear reaction. A bomb is an uncontrolled reaction with a large kinetic energy," Serhiy Vasylenko shares his knowledge. "Nuclear bombs are different. For example, if we take into account the smallest, then it is capable of destroying all living things in a radius of one kilometer. At the epicenter of the explosion, the temperature can reach about a million degrees. In other words, everything within a radius of one kilometer will disappear, turn into ash, and within a radius of five kilometers there will be destruction due to the blast wave. Next comes into effect radiation. Everything will depend on the air. You can secure yourself in a shelter where the thickness of the concrete is 6 meters. The maximum bomb, in my opinion, is capable of destroying all living things in a radius of 25 kilometers. If the enemy needs to destroy more, then he can use several."

What happens after the explosion

"Heavy radioactive particles settle, contaminating the land and water in a radius of at least a kilometer. The further from the epicenter of the explosion, the lower the radiation level. The wind can carry the radioactive cloud anywhere," says the associate professor.

According to the expert, if there is no evacuation and decontamination, then you should go outside no earlier than in a day, and preferably in a few days.

"You should remember about radiation, which can cause burns. That's why you should have a gas mask or respirator, rubber shoes, clothes that cover areas of the skin," Serhiy Vasylenko advises.

How can they notify about a nuclear attack

According to the expert, Ukrainian intelligence may be aware of a nuclear strike in advance.

In turn, public notification of such a strike may, of course, differ from air distress signals.

"In my opinion, it will be a voice message using all possible means of notification, including the Internet. But in 15-30 minutes it will be difficult to leave a dangerous territory within a radius of, for example, 20 kilometers," says Serhiy Vasylenko.

When asked what to do immediately after the notification, he advises the following: "It is advisable to quickly run to a shelter that is located underground. For example, in an underground parking lot."

What stocks can be made now

"After the explosion, a certain area is contaminated with radioactive iodine for 7 days. If a person drinks a "Potassium iodide" pill after the explosion, then there will already be iodine in the body (the dosage for people of a certain age was recently published by the Ministry of Health - Ed.). Radioactive in this case, iodine will no longer enter," says the physics teacher.

Regarding other reserves, the expert says the following: "It may happen that the city may be destroyed, for example, by 50%. There will be no electricity, heat too. The situation in such a case should be considered as if you were in a boat in the middle of the ocean, when in there is nothing near you. The more water you have at home, the better. Water, vegetables and fruits, cereals are able to remove radionuclides. There should be a supply of water for at least three days until the evacuation begins. A dosimeter, a supply of batteries will not be superfluous, radio receiver. We must be prepared for the fact that there will be no Internet."

We will remind you that on September 30, during the attempt to annex part of Ukraine, the Russian dictator Putin once again spoke about the use of nuclear weapons.

In response, NATO Secretary General stated that the Alliance will react if Russia uses nuclear weapons against Ukraine.

The Alliance is now monitoring what Russia is doing, because the aggressor state must understand that a nuclear war cannot be won.
