The general director of the Russian-occupied Ukrainian nuclear power plant in Zaporozhye has been detained by a Russian patrol, Energoatom, the Ukrainian state agency in charge of the plant, said today, Reuters reported.

Igor Murashov was detained on his way from Europe's largest nuclear power plant to the city of Energodar at around 16:00 local time yesterday, the company said in a statement.

"He was taken out of the car and blindfolded and taken in an unknown direction," the statement said.

"His detention by Russia threatens the safety of Ukraine and the largest nuclear power plant in Europe," said the president of "Energoatom" Petro Kotin, the Associated Press reported.

Kotin asked Russia to immediately release Murashov.

Russia did not immediately confirm that it had detained the plant's director.
