The Popular Front of India (PFI) is a branch of the Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI).

The government had banned SIMI in the year 2001.

The PFI was formed by merging three organizations from the South.

During a meeting in Kozhikode in February 2009, the three constituents National Development Front (NDF) Kerala, Karnataka Forum for Dignity (KFD) Karnataka, and Manitha Neethi Pasarai (MNP) Tamil Nadu merged to form PFI.

Jharkhand government banned in 2019


On February 12, 2019, the Jharkhand government declared PFI an illegal organization under section 16 of the Criminal Law (Amendment) Act 1908.

PFI since its inception has supported Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI), Campus Front of India (CFI), National Women Front (NWF), All India Imam Council (AIIC), National Confederation of Human Rights Organization (NCHRO), Rehab Formed bodies like India Foundation (RIF).

Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI):  

It is the political wing of PFI launched on 29 July 2009 with the objective of mobilizing the vote bank of Muslims and Other Backward Classes to gain political power.

SDPI has been registered as a political party with the Election Commission of India on 12 April 2011.

Campus Front of India (CFI):

This is the student wing of PFI launched by NDF on August 30, 2005 and organizes various programs in college campuses on issues like Babri Masjid demolition, Israeli aggression, Palestine, blasphemy, Sangh Parivar, anti-fascism. been organizing.

The people of CFI cadre were involved in the murder of a student Abhimanyu (SFI activist) in the premises of Maharaja College, Ernakulam, Kerala. This murder took place on 2 July 2018.

What are the allegations on


PFI PFI is accused of developing radical ideology by recruiting new youth into the organization.

The organization has developed a multi-level training module to maintain a strong and vibrant cadre force to meet its violent needs.

Post-recruitment, classes were taken to show youths selective video clippings on emotional issues such as the Babri Masjid demolition, communal riots in Gujarat and other parts of the country, aimed at creating a sense of mistrust in states and communities over 'Muslim persecution'. To do. 

  • In July 2010, PFI members were accused of beheading a teacher, TJ Joseph.

  • February 2019 - Ramalingam, a member of PMK, killed after an argument with some Muslims about conversion activities.

    Ramalingam was murdered as part of a conspiracy when he tried to interfere in the conversion led by the PFI team.

  • January 2020 - PFI found involved in funding anti-CAA protests.

  • February 2020- PFI played a key role in North-East Delhi riots during CAA protests.

  • August 2020- SDPI played a key role in Bengaluru riots against an inflammatory Facebook post.

  • September 2021 - PFI found involved in inciting violence during police eviction drive against militants in Darrang district of Assam.

  • January 2022 - CFI instigates 4 Muslim students for hijab controversy in Udupi district, Karnataka.

  • July 2022 - Four PFI members booked under UAPA in Nizamabad for anti-national activities.

  • The PFI is known to be heavily dependent on the expatriate Muslim community spread across the Gulf for its financial needs. 


Allegations of getting funds from Gulf countries


Many hawala channels are used to get funds from gulf countries and the funds through hawala channels have mostly come to Karnataka and Kerala.

PFI is not FCRA registered.

There is a clear mismatch between PFI's claimed capacity to raise funds and the many pan-India/state level campaigns/seminars and community service programmes.

Rehab India Foundation: The charity wing of PFI has received funds from Saudi Arabia.

Several senior leaders of PFI/SDPI are traveling to Turkey to meet think tanks and NGOs which may possibly be involved in illegal activities.

Recently, senior leaders of PFI/SDPI traveled to Turkey along with senior leaders of JEIH to meet IHH which is believed to be involved in terror-funding in Syria.

The continuous radicalization of its cadres by the PFI has resulted in many of its cadres from Kerala turning to international terrorist organizations, mainly the Islamic State, since 2016.

Abu Tahir Palakkad A PFI supporter from Kerala who was an employee of Thejas (PFI mouthpiece), was the first person to join Jabhat al-Nusra in Syria.

After that Sajir Abdullah, one of the founding administrators of SDPI Facebook page 'SDPI Keralam', went with IS in Afghanistan.
