The European Union

will extend the scope of the sanctions in force in relation to the annexed Crimea to the territory of other regions of Ukraine not under the control of the Ukrainian government.

This was stated by the head of EU diplomacy, Josep Borrell, at a briefing on Wednesday.

"We are expanding the geographic scope of the restrictions on Crimea, which were adopted earlier this year, to Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts. They will cover all areas of Ukraine not under government control, including Kherson and Zaporizhia oblasts, which do not belong to Donbas and which were not part of past decisions ", Borrell said.

Russia has escalated the invasion of Ukraine to a new level.

And we are determined to make the Kremlin pay the price for this further escalation.

Today, we are proposing a new package of biting sanctions against Russia ↓

The "Crimean sanctions" introduced by the European Union after the annexation of the peninsula prohibit the import into the EU of products from illegally annexed Crimea or Sevastopol, as well as a ban on infrastructure or financial investments and tourist services from illegally annexed Crimea or Sevastopol.

The export of certain goods and technologies to Crimean companies or for use in Crimea in the transport, telecommunications and energy sectors or for the exploration and production of oil, gas and mineral resources is also subject to restrictions.

It will be recalled that the European Commission

presented proposals for the eighth package of sanctions

against Russia due to its invasion of Ukraine and the holding of pseudo-referendums in the occupied territories.
