The USA welcomes the release of several political prisoners in Belarus, including Radio Svaboda correspondent

"Although the release of political prisoners is a step in the right direction, too many political prisoners remain behind bars in Belarus.

We demand the immediate and unconditional release of all political prisoners," said the official statement of the US State Department, issued on Sunday, September 25.

During the last few days, several political prisoners were released before the deadline.

Human rights activists are well aware that some of them were released through the amnesty procedure.

Earlier, at one of the meetings

, Alexander Lukashenko

proposed to consider the project of amnesty for prisoners before the Day of National Unity, adding that "it is permissible only for those who really deserve it."

said that up to 8,000 prisoners may be eligible for amnesty.

However, the bill on amnesty has not yet entered the House of Representatives.
