Human Rights Commissioner (Ombudsman) of the Republic of Azerbaijan Sabina Aliyeva is on an official visit to Strasbourg.

According to APA, within the framework of the visit, the Ombudsman held a meeting with the Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Maria Burich.

During the meeting, S. Aliyeva reminded that this year marks the 20th anniversary of the Office of the Ombudsman in Azerbaijan, and noted that numerous projects implemented in cooperation with the Council of Europe during these years contributed to the development of the institution.

During the speech, the reforms carried out in recent years in order to improve the work of the Office of the Ombudsman and its regional centers were also taken into account.

Later, the Ombudsman talked about the policy of aggression that our country has been subjected to by Armenia for almost 30 years, including the violated rights of our internally displaced persons.

He also touched on the fact that the fate of 3,890 Azerbaijanis who disappeared during the First Karabakh War is still unknown.

In addition, M. Burich was informed about the territories mined by Armenia during the occupation, the difficulties for the safe return of IDPs, and the human casualties caused by mine explosions.

At the meeting, the Azerbaijani Ombudsman pointed out that the latest provocations caused by Armenia have caused numerous casualties, and that such situations are an obstacle to a just and sustainable peace in the region.

In the end, S. Aliyeva said that she believes that international organizations will show a firm position on this issue.

During the meeting, other issues of interest to the parties were discussed.
