Chairman of the European Council

Charles Michel,

speaking at the session of the UN General Assembly on September 23, called for the suspension of Russia's membership in the UN Security Council.

"If a permanent member of the UN Security Council starts an unprovoked and unjustified war, a war condemned by the UN General Assembly, the suspension of his membership in the UN Security Council should be automatic," said Michel.

Russia is discredited as a permanent member of the UN Security Council, said today the official representative of the EU foreign policy service

Peter Stana

at a briefing in Brussels.

According to him, starting not even from February 2022, but from the moment of the annexation of Crimea and disturbances in the east of Ukraine in 2014, Russia shows that it is not a responsible member of the international community.

"After recent threats to use nuclear weapons, Russia has completely discredited itself as a permanent member of the UN Security Council," he emphasized.

- After all, the permanent members of this Council have the duty and responsibility to set the direction in which the world is moving, to determine whether it will be dominated by peace or war and contempt for the UN Charter."

Peter Stana noted that Charles Michel heads the Council of the European Union and, calling for the suspension of the membership of the Russian Federation in the UN Security Council, spoke on behalf of all the countries that are members of the European Union.

Among the five permanent members of the UN Security Council after "Brexit", only one country that is part of the European Union remained - France.

The other member states of the Council are Great Britain, the United States, China and Russia.
