[Central News Agency] Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) said today that it had detained a Japanese consul in the Russian Far East city of Vladivostok for espionage and had ordered him to leave Russia, Russian media reported.

The Japanese consul was declared persona non grata after he was caught on the spot while receiving classified information on the impact of Western sanctions on the economic situation in Russia's Far East, Russia's FSB said.

The Federal Security Service also mentioned that the Japanese consul obtained the classified information with money, which also included the field of cooperation between Russia and an unnamed country in the Asia-Pacific region.

Russian media, citing the Federal Security Service, reported that Russia had lodged a protest with Japan, but Tokyo authorities had yet to respond.
