The security wall of the dam of a hydroelectric project has been broken due to landslide in Arunachal Pradesh.

Guwahati:

The security wall of the Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project (SLHP) at Gerukamukh has been damaged due to a massive landslide caused by heavy rains in Arunachal Pradesh.

Sources said the project's intake tunnel has been closed due to damage.

An official said, "The security wall collapsed after the water level rose due to heavy rains in Arunachal Pradesh. After this the laborers working at the site were immediately evacuated. The ongoing work there has been stopped and it has to be restored again." It will take time to start over."

Sources said that two of the five tunnels of the hydroelectric project have been closed by the National Hydro Electric Power Corporation (NHPC) to avoid flooding in the low-lying areas of the Subansiri river in Lakhimpur district.

Incessant rain in the upper reaches of the state for the past few days is the main reason behind this new development related to the power project of 2,000 MW SLHP dam in Arunachal Pradesh.

"It won't have much impact as it was a temporary structure. There will be no flooding in low-lying areas. A similar incident happened at the project site two years ago," an official said.

Heavy rains have caused landslides, flood waters are flowing over the construction of the main dam, causing havoc in low-lying areas.

Workers at the construction site are most vulnerable in this situation as another landslide would mean disaster for the entire region.

The rise in the water level of Subansiri has worried the people living along the river about possible floods and erosion in the areas downstream from the SLHP dam.

Earlier in June, a construction worker was killed and two others were injured in a landslide at the under-construction SLHP.
