Two people died in a collision of small planes on the outskirts of the East German city of Gera, DPA reported, citing the fire service, BTA informed.

According to initial information, the dead were pilots who were engaged in aerial acrobatics.

Their planes collided mid-air near Loimnitz Airport on Saturday evening.

Apart from the pilots, there were no other victims or injured in the incident, the authorities said.

Police, fire and medical teams have arrived at the scene.

"The exact circumstances surrounding the incident are the subject of an immediate criminal investigation," Gera police said in a statement.
