Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in Kigoma region have spent Shs 20.4 billion in implementing development projects for the people in the past one year.

The Assistant Registrar of Non-Governmental Organizations in Kigoma Region, Msafiri Nzunuri said this while giving information to the Regional Head of Kigoma, Thobias Andengenye during the annual general meeting of the Council of Non-Governmental Organizations (NACONGO) in Kigoma Region.

Nzunuri said that the health projects include the construction of 15 buildings for the provision of services and equipment, two ambulances, the construction of two clinics and major renovation of two patient wards at the Kigoma Regional Referral Hospital.

In addition, he said that this amount of money has also been able to implement 15 water projects where five projects are already working, in education there has been the construction of 15 new classrooms and the renovation of 13 classrooms where 16 motorcycles have been given and distributed to social welfare officers in the districts of the Region of Kigoma.

Speaking at the meeting, Kigoma Regional Commissioner, Thobias Andengenye said that non-governmental organizations that lack transparency and accountability are losing the trust of donors and philanthropists in providing funds to finance development projects of citizens.

He said that there are some organizations that are run by families while they are used to launder money, so they have become an obstacle in the implementation of citizens' activities due to many things being done for their benefit instead of the interests of the community.

On his part, a member of the Nacongo General Council, Angelo Tungaraza said that non-governmental organizations have been very successful in implementing development projects for the people.
