"I know some are calling for an end to the fighting, but I have to say that the reality is this: if Russia stops fighting - the war is over, if Ukraine stops fighting - there will be no more Ukraine," she said.

Von der Leyen spoke at Princeton University in the US after attending the UN General Assembly in New York.

"The stakes are high not only for Ukraine, but also for Europe, for the international community and for the world order," she continued.

Von der Leyen added that recent successes by the Ukrainian army in recapturing territory from Russian forces are encouraging, but consolidation is needed.

According to her, the sanctions imposed on Russia by the EU and the US are working.

"I want to make it clear that the sanctions will continue," she said.

EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell yesterday promised new sanctions against Russia after President Vladimir Putin ordered a partial mobilization of reservists to support the military campaign in Ukraine.
