John Kirby, the strategic coordinator of the National Security Council of the White House, said that if the Russian Federation uses nuclear weapons, there will be serious consequences for it.

Kirby said this in an interview with ABC News.

Kirby called Putin's latest nuclear threats "typical" but said the U.S. and its allies still take the rhetoric "seriously."

"It's irresponsible rhetoric for a nuclear power, but it's not out of the ordinary compared to what he's been saying for the last seven months. We take it seriously. We monitor as much as we can their strategic position so that, if necessary, we can change our . We haven't seen any indication that it's needed right now," Kirby said.

And if Russia does use nuclear weapons, according to Kirby, "it will have serious consequences."

The Kremlin is going to annex the occupied territories of Ukraine and will try to politically legitimize it with fake referendums in the coming days.

According to Kirby, the US will not consider Ukrainian regions to be Russian.

"We will continue to support Ukraine with security systems and financially, as the American president said, as long as necessary," he added.

Kirby added that the occupied territories are Ukraine.

"It doesn't matter what fictitious referendum they hold and what vote they hold, it's still Ukrainian territory," Kirby emphasized.
