"This war aims, pure and simple, to remove the right of Ukraine to exist as a country. As well as the right of Ukrainians to exist as a people," Biden said from the rostrum of the UN General Assembly.

He denounced the Russian invasion by a permanent member of the UN Security Council.

Strongly condemning the invasion, Biden said reports of Russian atrocities against civilians in Ukraine "should be chilling" to everyone, no matter where they live.

The US president added that the new nuclear threats made by his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin against Europe showed a "reckless disregard" for his country's responsibilities.

"Russia has signed the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons," Biden reminded.

"We will continue to stand in solidarity against Russian aggression. Period," said the American president.

According to Biden, no one threatened Russia, and no one but Russia sought conflict.

"The war in Ukraine is the work of one man," he stressed, referring to Putin.

"Russia must be held accountable for any war crimes committed in Ukraine," Biden said.

"We are working together with the G-7 countries and countries with similar positions to show that democracies can protect both their citizens and help the rest of the world," said the American president.

Biden has come out in support of major reform of the UN Security Council.

The US president called for "increasing the number of permanent and non-permanent members" of this main body of the world organization, so that countries from Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean can be represented there.
