The German prosecutor's office has launched an investigation into three pig farms in West Germany over allegations of animal cruelty, DPA reported.

The prosecutor's office in the city of Münster said it was investigating possible violations of the Animal Welfare Act.

Senior prosecutor Martin Botzenhardt said the investigation was prompted by the German Federation for Animal Welfare, which provided photographs as evidence.

According to the organization, the evidence speaks of violations committed by seven companies.

Six of them are from the area of the city of Münster and the eastern part of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, and one from Lower Saxony.

Pigs are tortured in all the farms of these companies.

The videos, taken in May, allegedly show pigs with open wounds, injured animals unable to get up from the floor, and dead pigs, BTA added.
