Erdogan did not elaborate on the exchange, one of the largest in the seven-month war, and called the people hostages without specifying exactly how many were from each side.

"200 hostages will be exchanged according to an agreement between the two countries. I think this will be a major step forward," Erdogan told PBS late Monday.

Turkey, a NATO member, is trying to be neutral in the conflict by supplying drones to Kyiv and staying out of Western sanctions on Moscow.

Erdogan also said he had the "impression" that Putin wanted to end the war.

"We had an extensive discussion and he actually showed me that he is willing to end this as soon as possible," the Turkish president said.
