The largest Turkish private bank IşBank (İş Bankası) has stopped working with the Russian payment system "Mir", Halk TV reported today, as quoted by TASS.

According to the TV channel, the decision comes after an announcement of possible sanctions by the US Treasury Department against foreign financial institutions that accept Mir cards. 

On Thursday, the US Treasury Department said it is ready to introduce sanctions in case of support for the Russian Federation's attempts to expand the use of the Mir payment system beyond the borders of the Russian Federation.

Ankara starts paying 25% of Russian gas imports in rubles

At the beginning of May this year, Turkish Finance Minister Nureddin Nebati assured that Russian tourists will not have problems paying for goods and services in the country thanks to the "Mir" payment system.

It was previously stated that the cards of this system are accepted by major Turkish banks such as Ziraat Bankası, VakıfBank, İş Bankası, DenizBank, Halkbank, the agency noted, quoted by BTA.
