Japan today warned that a powerful typhoon could pass through the southwestern island of Kyushu, and meteorologists predicted unprecedented winds and waves and called for the highest level of attention, the Kyodo agency reported, quoted by BTA.

The Japan Meteorological Agency said Typhoon Nanmadol was already close to the southern island of Yakushima, with winds reaching 162 kilometers per hour.

It is slowly moving north towards the main southern island of Kyushu, where it is possible to cause rainfall later today.

Nanmadol is expected to reach Tokyo on Tuesday, the Associated Press reported.

In addition, the weather agency predicted that up to 50 centimeters of rain could fall tomorrow afternoon and warned of the danger of floods and landslides.

Citizens were urged to evacuate due to the threat of "unprecedented" winds and waves.
