The UN press service notes that the Belarusian delegation proposed not to limit this exception to Ukraine only, but its amendments did not pass.

101 countries voted for the decision to give Zelensky the right to speak, another 19 abstained (Algeria, Angola, Bangladesh, Brazil, Burundi, China, Iraq, Iran, Malaysia, Mongolia, Namibia, Nepal, Pakistan, El Salvador, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Thailand, Uzbekistan, Sri Lanka, South Africa).

The resolution, which was authored by dozens of countries, emphasizes that it is only about the current session and exclusion should not be a precedent, the UN press service notes.

The decision is motivated by the fact that the General Assembly takes into account "circumstances in which the heads of peace-loving sovereign states, members of the United Nations, cannot personally participate in the meetings of the General Assembly for reasons beyond their control due to prolonged foreign invasion, aggression, military actions that do not allow them safely leave their countries and return to them."

According to the adopted document, Ukraine can present "a pre-recorded statement of the president, which will be shown in the hall of the General Assembly during the general debates at its 77th session."

The 77th session of the General Assembly opened in New York on September 13.

The high-level week will begin on September 20, Zelensky's address is scheduled for September 21.
