Mumbai:

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Friday submitted a charge sheet against Sanjay Raut, arrested under the charge of alleged money laundering in the Patra Chawl case.

The agency has submitted a supplementary charge sheet in the case.

According to the agency, there is evidence of Sanjay Raut's involvement in the scam.

The ED on Friday opposed the bail plea of Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut, claiming that the leader played a key role in money laundering related to the Patra Chawl redevelopment project and worked "behind the scenes".

The Rajya Sabha member was arrested in this case in July and is currently in jail in judicial custody.

He has applied for bail in the special PMLA (Prohibition of Money Laundering Act) court.

The ED (Enforcement Directorate) rejected Raut's contention that the action against him was taken as a form of political vendetta.

"The accused, through his proxy and close aide Praveen Raut (co-accused), played a key role in the crime," the probe agency said.

He (Sanjay Raut) is working behind the scenes to avoid money laundering." The ED is probing alleged financial irregularities in the Patra Chawl redevelopment project.

Situated in suburb Goregaon, Siddharth Nagar, popularly known as Patra Chawl.. is spread over 47 acres of land and housed 672 tenant families.

The Maharashtra Housing and Regional Development Authority (MAHADA) entrusted the redevelopment of Patra Chawl to Guru Ashish Construction Pvt Ltd, a company affiliated with HDIL, in 2008.

As per the tender, the construction company was to construct 672 flats for the tenants and also to give some flats to Mahada.

He could sell the remaining land to private developers.

But even after 14 years, the tenants did not get a flat as the company did not redevelop Patra Chawl and sold the entire land to other builders for Rs 1,034 crore.
