The death toll from floods and landslides in Italy caused by heavy rains that lashed several cities in central and eastern Italy has reached 10, the Associated Press reported, citing state radio.

Several people are still being searched, and dozens of survivors have climbed onto the roofs of their houses or onto trees, waiting for the rescue teams, "Darik" adds.

Earlier, the fire department reported seven dead and three missing.

However, state radio RAI said 10 deaths had been confirmed.

Four people, including two children, were still being searched for this morning.

One of them was carried away by the incoming waters in the municipality of Barbara while it was in the arms of its mother, the Italian news agency ANSA reported.
