TMC leader Saugata Rai accused BJP workers of creating nuisance.

Saugata Roy of Trinamool Congress After heavy violence during BJP's protests in Kolkata and Howrah yesterday against alleged corruption by Mamata Banerjee government, Saugata Roy of TMC has defended.

He has told the police to work with utmost restraint.

Saugata Roy said the police had shown "tremendous restraint" in the face of "extreme provocation".

The Trinamool MP said, "Where did Mamata Banerjee show dictatorship? BJP's rally has been going on since afternoon. Police did not fire at anyone".

Rai said that the BJP's intention was to provoke the police, so he resorted to firing, he said, "BJP workers have randomly thrown stones and bricks. They have injured many policemen, including IPS officers. They have attacked the Burabazar area. Cars have been broken. Very few BJP people have been injured. On every TV screen you can see BJP workers throwing stones.

Kolkata and parts of Howrah turned into a war zone yesterday when BJP workers clashed with the police during their march to the state secretariat "Nabanna".

Visuals from the city showed fierce fighting in some main streets and alleys, with BJP supporters waving flags against the police with bamboo sticks and pelting stones.

BJP workers set a police vehicle on fire.

Police tried to control the crowd with sticks, water cannons and tear gas.

Injured protesters were seen lying on the road.

Roy said that several policemen, including an IPS officer, were also injured.
