The US Senate Foreign Relations Committee has approved a bill providing Taiwan with $4.5 billion in military aid and granting it the status of a "major non-NATO ally".

APA reports that Jim Rish, the head of the committee, said this.

After approval by the appropriate committee, the bill, titled "Taiwan Policy," will be considered by the entire upper house of Congress.

According to the draft of the document, it would provide Taiwan with $4.5 billion over four years, as well as loan guarantees of up to $2 billion for military purchases.

It should be recalled that the situation around the island of Taiwan became tense after the visit of Nancy Pelosi, the speaker of the House of Representatives of the US Congress, in early August.

China, of which Taiwan is a province, condemned the visit, suspecting US support for Taiwan separatism.

Against the background of the bold step of the American speaker, Beijing has conducted large-scale military exercises.
