New Delhi:

The top Congress leadership has asked all state units to pass resolutions to nominate state unit chiefs and All India Congress Committee (AICC) members for interim president Sonia Gandhi.

Sources have given this information to NDTV.

This could mean question marks over the entire process of internal elections to be held next month, although such proposals cannot be hindered in the election of the party president.

Sonia Gandhi will not contest the elections, but what has put the party in trouble is her son Rahul Gandhi's decision not to contest.

The family is in favor of a non-Gandhi being made the president, which means Sonia Gandhi's daughter Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, who is currently the general secretary, is not an option.

Loyalists like Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot are being seen as potential non-Gandhi alternatives.

Insiders say that nothing stops state representatives from passing a resolution allowing incumbent Sonia Gandhi to name the next Congress president.

However, it will not be binding on the Congress Central Election Authority.

A leader associated with the election process said, "We are not part of this process of passing the resolution."
