"I have the feeling that we are very far from peace. I would be lying if I said it could be achieved soon," Guterres said at a press conference.

"I have no illusions, at this stage the chances of a peace agreement are minimal," the UN Secretary General stressed.

He noted that there was "no prospect" even of a ceasefire.

Guterres announced that he also discussed with Putin the export of Russian fertilizers and food products.

The two also discussed the "extension and expansion" of the scope of the July 22 agreement on the export of Ukrainian grain.

The contract was concluded under the auspices of the United Nations, initially for a period of 120 days.

Putin told Guterres that the grain exported from Ukraine should go primarily to the most needy countries, the Kremlin press service reported, as quoted by France Press.

Russia has increasingly disputed the July 22 agreement.

She specifically claims that most of Ukraine's grain exports go to European countries - something Kyiv denies - and complains of obstacles to the export of Russian fertilizers and food products.

In the phone conversation with Guterres, Putin welcomed "constructive cooperation" with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in relation to the situation at the Russian military-controlled Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in southeastern Ukraine.

Europe's largest nuclear power plant has come under fire in recent weeks, which Kyiv and Moscow blame each other for.

An IAEA team, led personally by the agency's director general Rafael Grossi, visited the Zaporizhia NPP earlier this month and recommended that a "security zone" be established around it.
