Goa's veteran Congress leader told the reason for joining BJP

Panaji:

Eight Congress MLAs joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday amid political upheaval in Goa, which is being considered as a major setback for the opposition party.

Former Goa Chief Minister Digambar Kamat said he and the rest of the MLAs took God's permission before joining the BJP and "God agreed".

He said that he believed in God and it was true that he had taken an oath not to leave the Congress before the elections.

But he easily distanced himself.

"I went to the temple again and asked God what to do. God told me to do what is best for you," he told reporters.

The BJP retained its power by winning the assembly elections held in March this year.

The BJP had 20 MLAs earlier.
