New Zealand has declared September 26 a day of national mourning in memory of Queen Elizabeth II.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said this today, France Press reported.

"I hope this is an opportunity to honor the memory of Queen Elizabeth II for her work for the good of New Zealand throughout her life," Ardern told reporters in Wellington, BTA reported.

"The Queen was our sovereign, our head of state," continued the Prime Minister.

"She has made a huge contribution to New Zealand through her service to the country."

A state memorial service will take place the same day at the capital's St Paul's Cathedral.

Jacinda Ardern has confirmed that she will attend the Queen's funeral in London, along with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.
