Former Bosnian Serb military commander Ratko Mladic, who is serving a life sentence in The Hague for war crimes, has been hospitalized and is in "poor health".

This is what his son Darko Mlladiq said, as reported by foreign media, Telegraph reports.

In a short telephone conversation with AFP in Belgrade, Darko Mladic confirmed this information to the local media.

He told them that the former general had been hospitalized for a week due to his fragile health.

He was initially in the civil hospital in The Hague, while since Thursday he is in the health facility of the prison based in The Hague.

"His health is bad.

A team of doctors is ready here in Serbia who can go see him, but we don't know yet if they will be allowed.

We will ask permission for these doctors to examine him", Mladić was quoted as saying to AFP.

The Hague prison services, asked by AFP to comment on the information, replied that "they cannot comment on the state of health of the detainee, because it is confidential information".

In June 2021, the life sentence of Ratko Mladic was confirmed for genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes committed during the inter-communal conflict in Bosnia from 1992 to 1995.

He was found guilty of genocide for his role in the Srebrenica massacre, when Bosnian Serb forces killed around 8,000 Muslim men and teenagers in July 1995.

Darko Mladić told several media outlets in Serbia and BiH that his father suffered from "pneumonia, fluid accumulation in the lungs and heart problems".
