New Delhi:

The Central Government has fixed the maximum number of seats in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) at 250.

Till now, the total number of seats in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, including all the three municipal corporations, was 272.

Now there will be a total of 250 wards in the integrated Delhi Municipal Corporation.

Of these, 42 wards will be reserved for Scheduled Castes (SC).

The Central Government has issued its notification.

In Delhi, before the creation of a total of 250 wards in the Integrated Municipal Corporation, there has been a decrease of 22 wards in the total number of wards of the three municipal corporations.

A three-member commission was constituted in July for the delimitation of municipal wards in Delhi.

The Union Home Ministry had constituted a three-member commission for the new delimitation process for the wards of the MCD in Delhi.

It was said that this process would pave the way for the election of the civic body in Delhi.

Municipal elections will be held for the first time after the integration of the three municipal corporations of the city.

While the formation of the commission was welcomed by the BJP, it was criticized by the Aam Aadmi Party.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) had termed the formation of the Delimitation Commission as a hoax and alleged that it was another "trick" of the Bharatiya Janata Party-led central government to postpone the civic body elections.

The Delhi unit of the Congress had accused the AAP and the BJP of postponing the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) elections and disagreed on the process of delimitation.

The party had said that municipal elections should be held so that the work of the general public is not affected.
