The summer of 2022, marked by heat and severe drought linked to global warming, was the warmest on record in Europe, AFP reported, citing the European Copernicus service.

Average temperatures were "the highest for both August and the entire summer", surpassing by 0.4 degrees for the three months those of 2021, when the previous record was set, noted in a statement from the office of changes in the "Copernicus" climate.

For the period 1991 - 2000, they exceeded the seasonal average by about 1.34 degrees Celsius.

Temperatures in August were a record - 1.72 degrees Celsius above the average for the period 1991-2000.

An intense series of heat waves in Europe, combined with unusual drought conditions, led to an extreme summer with record temperatures, drought and fires, Freya Wamborg, chief scientist at the European Institute, said in a statement.

Half of the EU territory is threatened by drought

Drought and fires in many parts of Europe have affected society and nature in different ways, she noted, recalling that the previous record was only one year old.
