Police in Italy announced today that 22 suspected members of the Calabrian Ndrangheta mafia have been arrested and that a new branch of the organized crime group operating in the Calabria region has been discovered, BTA reports.

The detainees are suspected of belonging to the mafia, possession of firearms, attempted murder and other crimes, police said.

In the course of the operation, the existence of the Nazone-Gayetti clan was established, operating in the town of Scylla near Reggio Calabria.

The leader of this branch of the Ndranghe is believed to be a man who was released from prison in 2018.

According to law enforcement, the mobsters blackmailed and threatened numerous businesses with public procurement contracts and also infiltrated the municipal administration with their own people.

In addition, on behalf of the Ndranghe, they forced the restaurateurs to supply them with fish for other purposes as well.

The criminals have appropriated properties of six companies in the field of tourism and trade in beverages.

Authorities in Reggio Calabria, the regional capital at the southern tip of the "boot", have been investigating the mafia group since last year, DPA said.
