The EU chargé d'affaires in Minsk was detained by the police in Belarus for more than two hours.

This was confirmed today by a spokesperson of the European External Action Service.

He described the detention as illegal and added that it constituted a serious violation of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, affecting the security of diplomats in Belarus.

The arrest took place when the diplomat was leaving a session of the court on the sentencing of political prisoners behind closed doors, the spokesman explained.

He described the sentences handed down as excessively long and severe.
