England has experienced its warmest summer since such statistics have been kept, BTA reported, citing the British Meteorological Service.

In June, July and August, the average temperature in England was 17.1 degrees Celsius, including at night.

This record is tied with 2018's record, but some regions recorded less than 50 percent of normal rainfall for the period.

The east and north-east of England suffered the most from the heat.

The rest of Britain has not been spared either, and this summer was overall the fourth hottest in Britain since records began in 1884.

Western Europe is gripped by a heat wave

In July, temperatures exceeded 40 degrees for the first time in Britain and it was also the driest month on record in many areas in the south and east of England, forcing authorities to introduce water restrictions in some places.

There were rains in August, but not enough to come close to normal for this time of year.

Overall, the country experienced the first eight months of the year, which are the warmest since such statistics have been kept.
