According to data provided to ERT, only in the first 21 days of August, 613 migrants and 70 traffickers were detained in the Evros border region.

In the same period, 1,305 illegal migrants were detained throughout Greece, which means that half of the migrants detected in August were in the Maritsa border area with Turkey.

The pressure intensified especially in August, but the Greek authorities detected the trend much earlier.

In the May-August period, 1,809 people were detained for illegally crossing the border, while for the same period last year, their number was 1,347, i.e.

the increase is about 34 percent.
