In 2021, the EU produced more than 3.1 billion liters of ice cream, which is 4 percent more than the previous year, according to data from the European statistics agency Eurostat published on its website.

In the same period, EU Member States exported 254 million kilograms of ice cream to countries outside the EU, worth a total of €850 million.

At the same time, the import of ice cream from countries outside the EU amounted to 71 million kilograms with a total value of 192 million euros.

While the amount of non-EU ice cream imports decreased (-11 percent) compared to 2020, exports increased by 9 percent.

The main producer of ice cream in 2021 among EU member states is Germany, which produced 614 million liters.

It is followed by France (459 million liters) and Italy (381 million liters).

As well as being the largest producer in 2021, Germany produced the cheapest ice cream on average at €1.4 per litre.

France reported an average price of €2 per litre, while in Italy the figure was €2.1 per liter of ice cream.

What ice cream do we eat at sea?

France exported 57 million kilograms of ice cream in 2021, representing 22 percent of exports outside the EU.

This makes it the largest exporter of ice cream of all EU member states, ahead of the Netherlands (which exported 38 million kilograms of ice cream, or 15 percent of total exports outside the EU), Italy (33 million kilograms, or 13 percent), Germany ( 24 million kilograms, or 10 percent) and Belgium (23 million kilograms, or 9 percent).
