This is reported by DW, which refers to the German weekly Der Spiegel.

The newspaper reported that the Russian special services spied in Germany on the process of training Ukrainian military personnel to work with Western weapons systems.

According to the data of the German military counter-intelligence service MAD, Russian agents monitored the training of Ukrainians near the city of Idar-Oberstein in the federal state of Rhineland-Palatinate, as well as near the city of Grafenwehr in Bavaria.

In Idar-Oberstein, Bundeswehr instructors trained Ukrainian colleagues to use Panzerhaubitze 2000 (PzH 2000) self-propelled artillery installations, and in Grafenwehr, the US military held classes on the use of American artillery systems.

Shortly after the start of the training process, MAD spotted suspicious vehicles that appeared to be monitoring the roads leading to both military installations.

In addition, small drones flew over the training centers several times, filming the training of Ukrainian soldiers, reports Spiegel.

The German security services also suspect that the Russian special services may have tried to access the mobile phones of Ukrainians with the help of special devices, the magazine writes.

Grafenwehr is home to the largest US military training ground in Europe with an area of 200 square kilometers.

In late April, US Defense Department spokesman John Kirby confirmed that the United States had begun training Ukrainian soldiers in handling major weapons systems at US military facilities in Germany.

It was about preparation for the use of howitzers, radar systems and armored vehicles, which are supplied as part of military aid to Ukraine.

"The US military is organizing this training in coordination with the government of Germany, and we are of course grateful for Germany's support," a Pentagon official added at the time.

In addition, on May 11, joint training of Ukrainian soldiers with the armed forces of the Netherlands began at the Bundeswehr artillery school in Idar-Oberstein.

Soldiers were trained to work with PzH 2000. 12 such systems were handed over to Kiev by Germany and the Netherlands.
