British gas and electricity bills will jump by 80% from October, the country's energy regulator has announced.

This condemns millions of households on the island to energy poverty, experts warn.

Among the main reasons are inflation, which reached its highest level in 40 years, as well as the fuel situation after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, BNT reported.

The drastic increase in bills will be a consequence of the announced new higher price ceiling for electricity and gas.

A British household will pay an average of £3,549 a year, up from around £1,200 a year ago.

Electricity prices in Europe are rising as the energy crisis deepens

An NGO that fights energy poverty has described the situation as a disaster.

"In September 2021, 4 million households in the UK were energy poor. Today's news means that from October the number will jump to 9 million, and after January things will get even worse," commented Adam Scorer, executive director of the National Organization for energy actions.

Households that spend more than 10% of their income on electricity and gas bills are defined as energy poor.

A new surge in prices is expected in January.

Experts warn that many people cannot afford such expenses at all, and the quality of life will significantly deteriorate.

"There is an epidemic of cold homes in the UK. The cost is linked to ill health and mental health. Every year in the UK 10,000 people die from so-called cold homes. This number is set to rise," said Adam Scorer, chief executive. of the National Energy Action Organization.

The authorities will respond to the crisis with aid for the British.

All households will receive 400 lira for their bills, the most vulnerable - another 650, and there will be more help for pensioners.

The two candidates for the post of prime minister - Liz Truss and Rushi Sunak have not announced their ideas on how they will deal with the crisis.

Boris Johnson's successor should be clear on September 5.
