Five Chinese fighter jets crossed the middle line of the Taiwan Strait, which serves as an unofficial border between the two countries, Reuters reported, citing Taiwan's Ministry of Defense.

The news comes amid Beijing's ongoing military exercises near the island.

This is another such case in recent days.

Yesterday, two more Chinese fighter jets entered Taiwan's airspace.

Tensions between China and Taiwan have been rising for months.

China views the island as a breakaway province that should be united with the mainland.

Tensions escalated during US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit to Taipei, despite multiple warnings from China.

Shortly after, China began its largest-ever military exercises, which Taiwan described as preparations for an attack.

Two Chinese fighter jets invaded the skies over Taiwan

China's ruling Communist Party has proposed that Taiwan return to its "one country, two systems" model of governance, similar to the formula that returned the former British colony of Hong Kong to Chinese rule in 1997. Beijing says this would give a democratically-ruled Taiwan some autonomy to preserve some of its social and political systems.

However, Taipei rejected this plan.

Taiwan has lived under the threat of a Chinese invasion since 1949, when China's defeated government fled to the island after Mao Zedong's Communist Party won a civil war.
