At a meeting last night, the Greek government council for national security decided to extend the fence along the border with Turkey, which runs along the lower course of the river Maritza (Euros), along the entire length of the border river, reported ANA-MPA.

Currently, the fence is 38 km long, covering the short land section near Edirne and a relatively small part of the river.

The total length of the border between Greece and Turkey in Thrace is about 200 km.

Among the main topics of the meeting was the increasing migration pressure on both the land and sea borders of Greece.

Greece extends the fence along its border with Turkey

It was decided to extend the fence gradually, with priority given to sensitive entry points for illegal migrants.

The construction of the new sections will take place after a tender for a framework agreement.

The Council has also decided to strengthen the means of surveillance, BTA informs.

The topic of illegal migrants crossing the border between Greece and Turkey along the Maritsa river became relevant after the Greek authorities found 38 people from Syria and Palestine on Greek territory in the middle of the month.

A few days earlier, they had reported that they were on an island in the river, which the Greek government said was in Turkish territory.

According to the migrants, a child died there.

The migrants were later rescued 4 km south of their original location, now in Greek territory.

The Greek side reported that according to the migrants' testimony, they were not given the opportunity to apply for asylum in Turkey, but were forced to cross into Greek territory with threats.
