New Delhi:

Many people are also seeing Nitish Kumar's ambition to become the Prime Minister of Bihar by breaking ties with the BJP and forming the government with the RJD.

Now this is being discussed openly.

JDU State President Lalan Singh has given this air in one of his statements.

He said that Nitish Kumar is not the prime ministerial candidate of the opposition, but other parties can be an option if they want.

Amid talk of Nitish Kumar emerging as the prime ministerial candidate of the opposition, Lalan Singh said his main focus is to unite the opposition parties in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections and he will join the leaders of various parties after the trust vote in the Bihar Assembly. Will also visit the national capital Delhi to meet him.

He said that Nitish Kumar, who was the longest-serving Chief Minister of Bihar and the main face of JDU, is not a contender for the prime ministerial candidate of the opposition, but if the opposition wants, he can become an alternative.

When asked about the party's view in terms of other opposition parties supporting him to assume power, Lalan Singh said, "If other parties take a decision and want so, then it is an option."

The JD(U) president and Lok Sabha MP said several opposition leaders, including Sharad Pawar and Arvind Kejriwal, have congratulated Nitish Kumar after he severed ties with the BJP and forged an alliance with his rivals to form a new government in Bihar.

The JDU president said, "All the opposition parties should sit together to decide on the leadership to take on the BJP led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the next Lok Sabha elections or all the parties should fight unitedly to defeat the BJP and Both the options are to be decided later as to who will be their leader. Nitish Kumar will work to bring all the other parties fighting the BJP on a single platform, so that a united challenge can be presented."

Nitish Kumar's decision to break ties with his ally BJP since 1996, except for the period 2013-17, has fueled speculation about his prime ministerial candidature.

BJP leaders have claimed that this ambition was behind their decision to join hands with the RJD-Congress-Left alliance.

However, Nitish Kumar has rejected such claims.

His image, untainted by allegations of corruption and nepotism, is believed to have made him a strong choice to emerge as the leader of a united opposition - the BJP's two placards targeting most opposition parties, including the Congress.

On the BJP's target of winning at least 35 of the 40 Lok Sabha seats in Bihar, Lalan Singh said the party will lose 40 of its 2019 seats in Bihar, West Bengal and Jharkhand alone.

He said that by losing 40 seats, BJP's numbers will come down from the majority.

He said the ruling party should worry about its fate across the country in such a scenario.

Significantly, in the 2019 elections, the BJP had won 303 seats in the 543-member Lok Sabha.
