Germany will hire around 150 airport workers from Turkey to manage the ongoing chaos at airports due to lack of staff, reports "Daily Sabah".

The number is significantly smaller than initially expected, the publication said.

In late June, the German government announced plans to speed up work permits and visas for several thousand foreign airport workers, mostly from Turkey, to help ease the summer travel chaos that has unnerved vacationers.

However, only Munich and Nuremberg airports have been able to hire workers from Turkey, Thomas Richter, head of the aviation groundhandling employers' association (ABL), told Reuters.

They will assist with baggage handling under temporary contracts that will last until early November.

German airports report an increase in passengers but a drop in cargo loads

Industry associations have indicated that German airports are short of around 2,000 workers.

However, Turkey's state aviation authority, the General Directorate of Civil Aviation (SHGM), opposes the plan, fearing that German intentions will affect the further growth of Turkey's aviation industry.

Richter said most airports end up not hiring foreign workers because the process of getting them to Germany would take too long, and summer vacations are almost over.
