The Turkish army neutralized 13 terrorists in response to an attack today against Turkish forces, in which one Turkish serviceman was killed and four were wounded, Sabah reported, citing a statement from the Ministry of National Defense.

According to the communique, terrorists opened fire today in an area on the border with Syria near the town of Birecik, Şanlıurfa County.

One Turkish soldier was killed, and his four wounded colleagues were taken to hospital.

In response to the attack, retaliatory actions were taken in the area by firing at targeted targets.

According to initial data, 13 terrorists have been neutralized, the ministry said, adding that the operations of Turkish forces in the area are continuing.

The Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), recognized as a terrorist group by Turkey, the EU and the US, is active in the area.

The PKK has been waging an armed struggle against the Turkish state since 1984.
