New Delhi:

The ruling DMK government of Tamil Nadu has filed a petition in the Supreme Court in the matter of free 'Revdi'.

The petition said that the scope of free 'rewari' is very wide and "there are many aspects which need to be considered".

The Supreme Court is already hearing a petition by BJP's Ashwini Upadhyay.

In which the promise of free gifts at the time of elections has been challenged.

It has been said in that petition that this practice can bring financial ruin on a state.

Earlier, Arvind Kejriwal's Aam Aadmi Party, which is known for providing free electricity and water in the states ruled by it, had challenged the stand of the petition.

Significantly, Tamil Nadu is one of the states where the use of free gifts at the time of elections has been traditional.

Beyond party lines.

Even before elections, sometimes clothes, food and household items are distributed among the people in violation of the model code of conduct.

Be aware that after the elections, governments have consistently provided huge subsidies on food and other items.

The late Chief Minister of the opposition AIADMK, J Jayalalithaa, was known for her "Amma Canteen", where a few rupees could be eaten.

Chief Minister MK Stalin's DMK in its petition today argued that only a welfare scheme launched by the state government cannot be classified as a freebie.
