Author Salman Rushdie is still in a critical condition, but his "usual sense of humor and defiance remains intact," his son says.

Zafar Rushdie said his father had suffered life-changing injuries but was able to speak to his family.

The 75-year-old writer was seriously injured after being stabbed on stage at an event in New York state.

He has faced years of death threats over his novel The Satanic Verses, which some Muslims consider blasphemous.

The person accused of Friday's attack has pleaded not guilty to attempted murder.

"Following the attack on Friday, my father remains in a critical condition in hospital receiving ongoing extensive medical treatment," Zafar Rushdie wrote on Twitter.

The family were "extremely relieved" when Rushdie was taken off a ventilator on Saturday, he said, adding that the father was able to "say a few words".

Suspect Hadi Matar, 24, is accused of coming on stage and stabbing the Indian at least ten times in the face, neck and abdomen.

A judge ordered that he be held in prison without parole.
