A diesel fuel pipeline in the US state of Wyoming, owned by a company that federal prosecutors are already suing over spills in two other states, ruptured and spilled more than 205,000 liters of fuel, the Associated Press reported, citing a state official.

Work to clean up the spill, discovered by a pipeline operator on July 27, is ongoing, said Joe Hunter, emergency operations coordinator.

The fuel spill was on the grounds of a private ranch near the small town of Sussex in eastern Wyoming, he added.

Hunter said crews are currently excavating the contaminated soil, which will then be spread on dirt roads in the surrounding area, and the fuel is expected to largely evaporate.

According to a spill report released by the US Coast Guard's National Response Center, the pipeline is operated by Bridger Pipeline, a subsidiary of True Companies.

The company initially reported that the spill was only 1,590 liters in volume, but later revised its estimate to 205,250 liters, BTA noted.

A Bridger Pipeline spokesman said the initial assessment was based on information seen by company officials on site immediately after the spill was discovered.

The estimate of the spill's volume has been raised since excavation began, he added.
